Moving box sizes explained

If you are planning to move house, you are going to need some moving boxes.

But not all moving boxes are the same.

Moving boxes come in a range of sizes to meet different packing and transport purposes.

Here are the most common types of moving boxes – and what to use them for.

Small Moving Box

Typical dimensions: 403mm (W) x 301mm (L) x 330 mm (H)

Typical volume: 40L

Small moving boxes are perfect for packing smaller, heavier items because they are more sturdy and easier to handle than bigger boxes. It is also easier to put more specific things in smaller boxes, rather than adding a range of random items from different rooms to fill bigger boxes. Smaller boxes are perfect for moving things like books, tools, cutlery, kitchen appliances and other small miscellaneous items. Small boxes are also ideal for moving more fragile and delicate items, like crockery or glassware. However, as with any fragile items, ensure they are properly wrapped with packing paper or bubble wrap and to help prevent the chances of damage during a move. You should also clearly label any such boxes as ‘Fragile’ once you are finished packing them.

Medium Moving Box

Typical dimensions: 406mm (W) x 298mm (L) x 431mm (H)

Typical volume: 52L

Medium boxes can be used for packing a wide range of things, given they are a little bit bigger than small boxes but are still quite sturdy and are easy to move. They are generally the most popular choice of box for those moving house. Medium boxes are ideal for packing kitchenware – including appliances like kettles, toasters, coffee makers and blenders – as well as pots and pans. Medium moving boxes are also good for packing kid’s toys, folded clothes and less bulky linen items like folded sheets and towels.

Large Moving Box

Typical dimensions: 431mm (W) x 406mm (L) x 596mm (H)

Typical volume: 104L

Large moving boxes are best for the household items which take up significant space but are not particularly heavy. Large boxes are typically twice the size of medium boxes but are therefore less sturdy – unless you opt for ‘Heavy Duty’ versions. Large boxes are perfect for moving things like pillows, doonas, blankets, pet beds and soft kid’s toys. Canvas paintings and picture frames which are too big to fit in medium moving boxes can also be carefully wrapped and packed in large moving boxes, but be sure to label those boxes as ‘Fragile’. It can also be worth reinforcing the bottoms of large boxes with extra tape, to help ensure the contents of them do not fall out when they are picked up.

Other Types of Moving Boxes

Aside from the standard moving boxes listed above, there are a range of other boxes on the market which are available for specific items.

These include:

- Wine boxes, for safely moving bottles of wine.

- Port-a-robe boxes, for transporting clothes without taking them off hangers.

- TV boxes, for safely moving flat-screen televisions.

- Achieve boxes, for packing and storing important documents.

- Picture and mirror boxes, for safely transporting framed pictures and mirrors.
