How to move heavy furniture

The most physically difficult part of moving house is moving heavy furniture.

We all have plenty of things in our homes that aren’t exactly lightweight – like couches, tables, chairs, chests of draws and mattresses.

When it comes to moving heavy furniture, it is often best to call in professional movers to do the job.

You can risk injury if you do not have the strength to move heavy furniture yourself, do not have the right equipment or do not employ correct handling techniques

However, if you think you are up for moving heavy furniture yourself, here’s a few tips.

1. Make sure you have enough hands

Don’t try and move heavy furniture by yourself.

Ensure you have sufficient help, whether it is a second set of hands or even a third or fourth for very heavy items.

As they say, many hands make light work.

Don’t risk injury by taking on too much weight yourself.

2. Take apart what you can

Some heavy furniture will come apart into pieces easily enough and anything you take off will make it lighter to move.

For example, pull out the draws before moving a dresser and take off your couch cushions – if they are removable – before moving a couch.

3. Slide where possible

If you are moving heavy furniture across tiles or floorboards, it can often be best to slide it rather than lift it.

Put an old blanket or a piece of cardboard underneath the furniture.

You should then be able to more easily slide it across the floor towards your front door.

4. Hold high and low

For heavy furniture items like dressers or filing cabinets that can be carried by two people, it is generally best for one person to grab one end from the bottom and lift up and the other person to grab the other end from the top and hold it lower.

This is also a good way to carry heavy furniture down stairs, given it can roughly match the slope of the stairs.

5. Get the right tools for the job

The less bending down and manual lifting you do when moving heavy furniture, the better.

Tools like hand trolleys and furniture carrying straps can very much come in handy and will make your job a little easier.

When moving large mattresses, use a strap or a rope to run underneath and hold onto it as you carry the mattress vertically from either end.

Many mattresses don’t have handles and those that do shouldn’t always be trusted to hold when moving them.
