How to move and protect paintings

Paintings can not only be valuable but are also fragile items that need to be handled with extreme care when moving to a new property.

Whether the paintings are on canvas or are framed in glass, they can be easily damaged if they are not correctly packed and handled during the moving process.

However, with a little know-how, the right supplies and some professional and caring movers, you can ensure your paintings remain in pristine condition and are ready to hang on the walls of your new property.

What you’ll need to pack your paintings

In preparation for packing and moving your paintings, you are going to need purchase a few supplies if you don’t already have them.

The following items can all come in handy:

  • - Moving boxes
  • - Cardboard corner protectors
  • - Large non-stick paper sheets or plastic wrap
  • - Protective material (cardboard cut to fit the size of paintings or bubble wrap)
  • - Masking tape

How to pack paintings for a move

First thing’s first – put on some gloves before touching your canvas or painting and safely removing it from the wall.

You don’t want to ruin it with dirty fingerprints before you have even begun the process of moving it to your new property.

From there, you will want to place the painting on a clean, flat surface such as a table and follow these steps to pack it:

1. Make an ‘X’ on glass framed paintings

If your painting is framed in glass, use masking tape to make an ‘X’ shape across the glass which reaches each corner. If the glass does happen to break during your move, this will help prevent broken glass from moving around and potentially damaging your painting. Do not do this for canvas paintings or other paintings that do not have a glass cover.

2. Cover the front of non-glass paintings

If your painting is not framed in glass, you are instead going to protect it by wrapping it with another material. Large non-stick paper sheets are an option. Alternatively, you can use plastic wrap from your kitchen. These items will help prevent friction which could damage your painting.

3. Put on cardboard corner protectors

If your painting has a delicate frame, you can use cardboard corner protectors to help protect it. Place one of these on each of the four corners and secure them in place with tape.

4. Wrap the painting in protective material

This is the key shield to really protecting your painting for a move. You can either cut some pieces of cardboard to size and secure them to the front and back of your painting, or wrap your painting in another packing material like bubble wrap. These items will provide a good buffer between your painting and anything that might damage it.

5. Place the painting in a moving box

You can pack multiple paintings in one box, but be sure that they are facing the same direction and are close together but not packed too tightly. Fill any extra space in the box around the wrapped paintings – as well as between the wrapped paintings – with shredded paper or crunched up newspaper to provide added protection.

6. Label the box as ‘Fragile’

Be sure to clearly label the box as ‘Fragile’ and note that paintings are inside, as well as marking which way the glass is facing.

7. You’re ready to move your paintings!

Handled your packed box of paintings with care when moving and do not place any other items on top of this box at any stage.
