How long does it take to pack up a house?

Do you think it won’t take long to pack up your house?

Think again.

Packing up a house can be a very stressful and time-consuming task.

Of course, how long it takes for you to pack up your house will depend on a range of factors, including how big your house is, how many possessions you have and how many pairs of hands you have at your disposal to help.

Here’s a handy guide to help give you some idea of the task ahead of you.

The average time it takes to pack up a house

Unless you live in a small one-bedroom apartment, don’t expect to be able to pack up your house in one day or one weekend.

You can’t simply throw all of your possessions into boxes in a frantic rush if you want them to arrive at your new property undamaged.

Packing boxes should be done with care and using a layering technique, with heavier items on the bottom and lighter ones on top.

In addition, all fragile items should be individually wrapped before being placed in boxes – which can take significant time in itself.

Just think about all of your fragile kitchen and glassware for a start, let alone any other fragile items like photo frames and paintings.

People who live a minimalist lifestyle with few possessions will clearly be able to pack faster than those who have accumulated many, many possessions over the years.

However, as a rough guide, this is how long you should allow to pack up a house based on its size:

  • - One-Bedroom House – 1 to 2 days
  • - Two-Bedroom House – 2 to 3 days
  • - Three-Bedroom House – 3 to 5 days
  • - Four-Bedroom House – 4 to 6 days
  • - Five-Bedroom House – 6 to 8 days

Remember that this is only a rough guide.

If you have a fully-stocked shed, a garage that is brimming with items or maybe even under-house storage where you have plenty of things stacked away, you will probably need to allow extra time to pack up your house.

However, if you have the help of some family members or friends, you may be able to pack up in a shorter period of time.

The best way to pack up a house

The best way to pack up a house is to do so one room at a time.

Start with any spare rooms or less commonly-used areas, before working your way through to your kitchen and living area last.

If you have a lot of items in a garage, shed or in under-house storage, this can also be a good place to start.

The earlier you start packing up your house, the less stressful the final days before your move will be.
