Can you take solar panels with you?

Solar panels can be a great investment.

If you already have solar panels at your current house, you would no doubt know this.

Having solar panels on your roof can shave big money off your energy bills, particularly in the sunny summer months.

Larger solar panel systems can actually see the energy companies paying you for the electricity that you output into the grid, rather than the other way around.

But can you take them with you when you move house?

Here is what you need to know.

Moving house with solar panels

Is it possible to take your solar panels with you to your new house?

Technically, it may be.

However, it is also likely to be more trouble and will probably cost you more money than it’s worth.

One of the reasons for this is that there are always updating Australian Standards when it comes to inverter and solar panel requirements.

If your current solar panel system was installed before the most recent update of the Australian Standards, you would require a new inverter at a minimum and potentially even new panels to be able to have your system re-installed at your new house.

Even if your solar panel system was just recently installed and meets the most recent update of Australian Standards, the costs to have it removed from your current house and then have it re-installed at your new house would almost definitely be more than having a brand new system installed at your new house.

This is because generous government rebates for new solar panel systems in many Australian states make getting a new system quite affordable.

You could get the latest and greatest solar panel system installed at your new house for less than what it would cost to have your current system moved.

So, while you may be able to take your solar panels with you, chances are it would not be worth it.

It is best to leave solar panels off your packing list when moving house and instead arrange for a new system to be installed at your new house shortly after you receive the keys.

The other benefit of leaving your solar panels

Leaving your solar panels on your current house could be a big win financially, because they are a key selling point for home buyers.

Buyers might be willing to pay a little more for your house if you have good quality solar panels installed, knowing that it will save them on their own energy bills in the years to come.

Make sure your real estate agent makes mention of this when they are advertising the property or discussing it with prospective buyers.

This is another reason why it makes far more sense to leave your solar panels behind rather than taking them with you to your new house.
