Packing glasses and plates

Kitchenware – including glasses and plates – can be among the most difficult items to pack when you are moving to a new property.

These fragile items can easily break in transit if they are not packed correctly and that could not only mean a lot of mess at the other end but also unwanted additional expense and hassle to replace them.

However, with the right supplies and correct packing techniques these issues can be avoided and all your glasses and plates should be in one piece and ready to be put on the shelves in your new kitchen.

What you’ll need

When it comes to moving glasses and plates, Butchers Paper – which can also be known as ‘packing paper’ – is your best friend.

This can often be purchased at hardware stores and storage facilities in Australia, as well as online.

While some people use old newspapers when packing, Butchers Paper is a touch thicker, which makes it a better option.

Butchers Paper is also plain white, while old newspapers which are covered in ink could make a bit of a mess of your glasses and plates.

Along with Butchers Paper, you are going to need some boxes to put your glasses and plates in, which should all be clearly marked on the outside as ‘Fragile’ so they can be handled with extra care.

If you are using cardboard boxes for this, ensure that you use sufficient tape to reinforce the bottom of the boxes.

The weight of glasses and plates can quickly add up and the last thing you want is for the bottom of the cardboard box to give way when you are moving it.

How to pack glasses for moving

If you want all your favourite wine glasses to arrive at your new property in one piece, you are going to need to pack them right.

For wine glasses – or any glasses, for that matter – crunch up some of your Butchers Paper and place it inside the glass.

Then, individually wrap the outside of the glasses with Butchers Paper.

Given how fragile glasses can be, they are best packed on their sides in a single layer inside a box.

How to pack plates for moving

The best way to pack plates is to individually wrap them in your Butchers Paper.

Take a plate, pop it in the middle of a large sheet of Butchers Paper and pull all four corners of the paper over the plate to securely wrap it.

Once you have done this for four individually wrapped plates, stack them together and then wrap the four of them together in another piece of Butchers Paper.

This will add another layer of protection for each group of four plates.

Placing the groups of four plates vertically in your box is considered a better way to pack them than having them sit horizontally on top of each other.

Repeat this process until the box is fairly full.

You can add some additional crumpled up Butchers Paper, newspaper or other cardboard around the sides of the box to ensure extra protection and a sufficiently snug fit.

Bowls and other fragile dishes should be packed in a similar way, with each also being individually wrapped in Butchers Paper.
