How to pack a messy house

Not everyone has a house that is spick and span.

Some of us have a lot of possessions and limited storage space, resulting in a messy house.

If this is you, don’t despair.

If you follow a plan – complete with a timeline – you can pack a messy house in preparation for a move with as little stress as possible.

Tips to pack a messy house

Packing a messy house can be daunting.

You might be wondering: Where do I even start?

But if you follow these five top tips, you’ll get your messy house packed up efficiently.

1. Create a plan

This is the absolute best place to start when you need to pack a messy house.

Grab yourself a pen and paper and start working out a plan.

Lock in your moving date – including booking professional movers – and create a timeline working your way back from there.

Work out what packing supplies you will need, what your least-used possessions are that you can start packing straight away and ensure you have enough spare time to get packing bit by bit.

If you are short on time and are going to require packing help, it is best to arrange this early with your movers.

2. Begin with one room

The ‘one room at a time’ strategy can be a big help in the packing process, particularly when it comes to people with messy houses.

If you have a storage room or study that is stacked with items that you don’t often use, this could be a good place to start.

Don’t feel the need to pack up the whole room in one night, either.

Packing up one messy room could be spread over a few days if your timeline allows.

Once you have completed packing one room, you should feel a sense of achievement and it might make the task of packing up the rest of the house feel a little easier.

3. Declutter as you go

Do you really want your next house to be messy, too?

Probably not.

Chances are you will discover a lot of items you no longer want or need during the packing process, or maybe even items that are broken or no longer work.

This is the perfect time to get rid of them.

It can be a good idea to start four piles on the floor in one of your rooms – one for items that can be sold, one for items that can be donated, one for items that can go in the rubbish and one for items that can be recycled.

Consider hosting a garage sale or selling some items on an online marketplace, donate other items which are in good condition to a local opportunity shop and arrange a hard rubbish collection or make a trip to the tip to discard any other worn or broken items.

4. Label your boxes well

If you have a messy house, it is likely you are going to be moving a lot of boxes.

Be sure to label them well, not only with what is inside them but also what room you would like them placed in at your new house.

This can be helpful information for your movers and can save you a lot of work in rearranging boxes and unpacking items at the other end.

5. Consider storage options

If you struggle to get rid of many items and do not have substantially more storage space at your new property, it could be worth considering keeping some items at a storage facility for the short or long-term.

This can also give you more time to sell items you no longer want or work out what to otherwise do with them.
