5 reasons to move to Perth

The thriving capital of Western Australia, Perth ticks a lot of boxes as a place to live. In fact, Perth ranked as the sixth-most liveable city in the world in 2021.

Western Australia might seem a world away from Australia’s east coast, where much of the country’s population resides.

However, increasing numbers of people are making the move west. In 2022, Western Australia recorded the highest population growth of any state or territory in the nation.

Here are 5 reasons you should move to Perth.

1. The climate

Perth might just enjoy the best year-round weather of any major city in Australia.

The city has what is described as a “Mediterranean climate”, with hot and dry summers and mild and wet winters.

Daily highs during the summer months average 28 to 31 degrees, while in the winter months the daily highs still average a fairly comfortable 18 to 19 degrees.

Perth is also the most sun-soaked capital city in Australia, averaging a whopping 8.8 hours of sunshine per day across the year.

2. The laid-back lifestyle

Given Perth’s smaller population of around 2 million people, it is a little bit less busy and more relaxed than some of Australia’s other major cities.

However, Perth still has plenty of trendy bars, cafes and restaurants and a lively arts, culture and sporting scene.

Those who love a trip to the beach are also spoilt for choice living in Perth, which is surrounded by some of Australia’s great beaches.

Cottesloe Beach, Leighton Beach, Mettams Pool, Bathers Beach and City Beach are just some of the best ones to check out.

The amazing Rottnest Island is also just a short ferry ride away.

3. The employment opportunities

While many people view Sydney and Melbourne as the places to move to seek out employment opportunities, Western Australia had one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country in recent times.

There are plenty of jobs and plenty of big businesses in Perth and surrounds, as well as the wider state.

A number of major mining and energy companies are based in Perth.

Major conglomerate Westfarmers – which is one of Australia’s biggest single employers – also has its headquarters in the city.

4. Housing affordability

Living the Australian dream and owning your own home can be a lot easier to do in Perth.

In the December quarter of 2022, the median sale price for houses in Sydney was a staggering $1.41 million, while Melbourne came in just shy of seven figures at $975,000.

Meanwhile, the median house sale price in Perth was just $550,000.

Darwin was the only capital city in Australia with a lower median house price for that quarter.

For those who have been priced out of the housing market in cities like Sydney and Melbourne, Perth has become a very attractive and affordable alternative.

5. Travel connectivity

The Indonesian island of Bali is one of the most popular overseas destinations for Australians and it is closer to Perth than most other capital cities.

The flight time from Perth to Bali is a touch over three-and-a-half hours, compared to around six hours from Melbourne.

It is also possible to fly direct from Perth to London for a European escape, which you cannot do from any other Australian city.
