Moving home involves a lot of to-dos that it can be a very stressful and overwhelming experience. It may seem like you’re trying to move a mountain, but if you plan and stay organized, you can do it.
What’s critical in the success of every project is to identify the important things to do. With respect to moving, here are the top five things you need to take care of.
1. Hire a reputable removalist
When you explore your options, ask for a quote from at least three reputable furniture removals companies. Preferably, request an actual home visit to get a more accurate quote.
Read all the terms and conditions in the written quote to know what exactly the company is charging you. This will prevent surprise hidden charges.
After reviewing the quotes, choose the moving company and book your moving date.
2. Get ready with your packing supplies
Ask the moving company if they will supply you with free boxes. If not, you can buy packing supplies from them or other sources.
If you want to reduce your moving costs, look for free boxes. You can get some from liquor stores, grocery and office supply stores.
Don’t forget to buy packaging tapes, permanent markers and bubble wraps. You can also look for wardrobe boxes if you wish to have an easier way of transporting your clothes.
3. Manage the packing
Pack a first night box. This includes the essentials you can’t do without the first day or night you’re staying in your new home. Put in some clothes, basic toiletries, towels, bed linen and other important items.
If you can, it would be better to bring the basic supplies for your bathroom and kitchen to your new home prior to the move.
For your other stuff, a more organized and smart way to pack is to go from room to room. Don’t forget to make an inventory list so you can identify which high-value items you need to insure.
Do a little packing everyday instead of having a day of non-stop packing. If you honestly don’t have the time, get packing services from your removalist.
4. Ask about hard-to-move stuff
If you have certain possessions, like appliances, furniture or a piano, that require special packing or moving requirement, inform the mover ahead of time. This will help avoid delays and ensure that your items are delivered safely.
5. Switch services
Moving means you need to update or change some information like addresses and phone numbers. Take time to notify government bodies, businesses and banks about this so you don’t have to come back after your move.
You also need to switch utility providers. Especially if you’re moving to a new home, you need to make sure that gas, electric and water utilities are installed prior to your moving-in.
Other to-dos are not included in this moving checklist. But this will serve as a guide so you can start moving on the right foot.
