The Hidden Extras
You have estimated the cost of your moving expenses. But to your surprise, you still spent significantly more than what you estimated. Other people say that they experienced the same thing about moving.
Why are people spending more? Obviously some moving costs were not accounted for. Avoid being caught unaware of your moving expenses. Find out below the five hidden costs of a big house move:
Is the moving rate offer really cheap?
Many people choose the removalist that offers the cheapest price. But, sad to say, they find out later that the price refers to an hourly rate.
There’s nothing really wrong with the per hour rate. But they ended up spending a lot because they did not bother to know the other details of the offer. They did not know that the company will only send one man to do all the moving.
So, beware of unscrupulous removalists.
Why do you need to pay for storage?
Sometimes moving delays happen. If the new house you’re moving into is not quite ready yet, you need to find a place to store your belongings, and that costs money. Even if you just rent a self-storage unit for a month, it would still add a chunk of cash to your moving expenses.
Have you paid the fees for utilities?
Some utility companies collect deposits or installation fees prior to providing their services. So, while you’re still paying for the utility bill from your old house, you also have to pay for utility connection fees and deposits in your new house.
Have you bought what you need for the new house?
For sure, there were some items, like basic kitchen and cleaning supplies, which you threw away when you left the old house and now you need to replace them. How about those things that you sold during the garage sale and now you want to buy replacements?
If you do not prioritize what you need or want to buy, you can get a long list of additional expenses.
Did you lose your security deposit in your old apartment?
If you just left your old apartment in such a big mess, you’d probably lose your security deposit. Take the time to clean up before you go and do minor repairs and touch-up painting. It will not only make the property owner and new tenant happy, you will also be able to claim your security deposit for extra pocket money.
Now that you know what to watch out for, the next time you’re moving you can be sure to have a more accurate estimate of your moving costs.
